Mel Raffan - The Scrapbook House
“Fun fact: I’ve had a speaking role in a movie, modeled nude for an art gallery, and participated in two Guinness World Records!”
The Scrapbook House!
Hey everyone! Apologies in advance for the looooonngggg story!
If you don’t know me, I am Mel, and I own Scrapbook House.
I looovvveee to chat! My journey to discovering my purpose took about two years (but who’s counting?!). People often asked why I bought the shop, and honestly, I couldn’t articulate it at first. I just knew (strongly) that I needed to keep the workshop doors open so people could connect and enjoy paper crafting. After all, I used to go to classes just to get away from my children! (*half joking)
Your "WHY"
After the universe aligned several people in my life, my purpose fell into my lap:
“To empower others to create with confidence!”
This mission transcends crafts; it’s about instilling confidence in all aspects of life. Imagine if we all had the courage to take risks and explore new things! The mental health benefits of using your hands and connecting with others have been extensively researched. For some, it’s crucial to preserve their family history; for others, it’s about meeting like-minded people or simply taking a break from daily responsibilities.
Arts and crafts are often dismissed as “not serious,” but I argue that if it weren’t for artists, we wouldn’t know what happened in history! Through paintings, sculptures, and drawings, we learn what life was like in another time through someone else’s eyes.
The Highlights and Best Parts of Small Business Ownership
One of my greatest joys comes from our “show and tell” sessions, where customers share their creations and inspire one another. I love when someone walks through the door and says, “I love this, but I’m not good at it.” I often respond, “Do you need to be ‘good’ at it? Do you enjoy it?”
We frequently compare ourselves to others instead of simply giving it a go. I’ve been guilty of this myself! I remember attending a class and feeling sad that my art wouldn’t match the sample. But I decided to let go of the need for perfection and just enjoy the process. To my surprise, my creation turned out exactly as I had imagined! That moment gave me the confidence to say, “I can do this!” Now, when the next class comes up, I’ll definitely participate!
One of the most delightful aspects of my job is witnessing the transformation in our customers. When they first come in, they often doubt their abilities. But through encouragement and support, I love seeing them blossom into confident creators.
I also find immense joy in the community we’ve built. The laughter, the shared stories, and the friendships that blossom in our workshops are what make this journey worthwhile. It’s not just about crafting; it’s about creating connections.
The Hardest Parts Of Small Business Ownership
Now for the yucky bit: the hardest parts!
The roller coaster of income can change hour by hour. I vividly recall one Wednesday morning (payday for my employee who works just one day a week) when I didn’t have enough money in the bank to cover her wages. I hoped that the day’s takings would suffice, as I didn’t have a Plan B. Thankfully, it worked out, but it made me realize I need to have a backup plan in place. (*mental note: better do that!)
Having never worked in retail or run a business before, I’m learning every single day. I’m also very rules and regulations inclined (I blame my former profession for this!) and a bit OCD. I’ve learned that I can’t be rigid all the time, which can be a struggle. While I appreciate flexibility, I do love my routines.
Additionally, my strong customer service drive can sometimes cost me financially. I’m not the best at the money-making part; perhaps I need to find a rich husband to fund me… hmmm, Vin Diesel, are you out there?
There are days when the weight of responsibility feels heavy, and I sometimes question if I’m doing enough. But then I remember the smiles on our customers' faces and the joy they find in creating. That’s what keeps me going, even on the tough days.
Collaboration and Opportunities
Scrapbook House is more than just a retail space (that’s what keeps the workshop doors open). We run countless workshops and events to keep everyone engaged and learning. These include:
Hens Nights
Team Building Activities
Birthday Parties (for kids and adults!)
Snack, Scrap, and Sip Nights
And more!
When we’re not hosting workshops, we rent out the workshop space to others, providing an affordable way for them to explore their passions. I charge per head for attendees, not for the room, allowing those just starting out to have less financial burden and the freedom to explore and play without the stress of money.
In our retail space, we offer everything related to papercraft and even some hobbies! This includes wedding planners, funeral condolence books, travel journals, baby books, specialty pens (including popular paint pens), kits from classes, and a range of supplies to create whatever you like! If we don’t have something, I’ll refer you to other local stores, and if we can’t help right away, I’ll always try to order it in.
I see opportunities everywhere and absolutely love collaboration! With my background in Community Development (nope, that’s not the former job I hinted at earlier), I thrive on working together for the betterment of everyone involved.
I believe that collaboration is the secret sauce to opening doors to new opportunities. Whether it’s partnering with local artists for workshops or collaborating with other businesses for events, I’m always looking for ways to connect and grow together.
Achievements and Milestones
Now, let’s celebrate some wins! While I’m not one to boast (my mum taught me to be humble), so I’m not going to tell you about the Customer Service and Marketing awards I’ve won (sorry mum), I’m proud to say I’ve survived nearly three years in business. For two quarters last financial year, I even made a profit! More importantly, I cherish the countless messages and calls from customers thanking me for the difference I’ve made in their lives. Those moments are priceless and can’t be measured in dollars.
I often reflect on how far we’ve come as a community. The connections we’ve built and the support we’ve given each other are what truly make Scrapbook House special. I’m grateful for every customer who walks through our doors and every story shared.
When You're Not Working
Since owning Scrapbook House, I haven’t had much time for my own paper crafting (who knew running a business would be so time-consuming?!). However, I do get the occasional chance to be creative.
I used to practice MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), which I loved, but these days, I enjoy the simple pleasures of walking to the fridge, grabbing snacks, and curling up on the couch to watch a good movie!
I’m a huge fan of horror and science fiction—what a true escape from reality!
And now, for the big reveal: my former job was as an investigator for the Federal Government. But that’s another story for another day!
Fun fact: I’ve also been in a movie (yes, a speaking role!), been a nude model for an art gallery, and participated in two “Guinness Book of Records” records. Feel free to ask me about those at the next social meetup!
A Final Thought
As I wrap up this lengthy tale, I want to express my gratitude for each of you who has supported Scrapbook House. Your enthusiasm and creativity inspire me daily. I hope this glimpse into my life and the journey of Scrapbook House inspires you to explore your own creativity and connect with our wonderful community. Remember, it’s not about being perfect; it’s about enjoying the process and empowering each other along the way.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and I can’t wait to see you at Scrapbook House!
